It’s taking place! Despite the fact that the American actors guild may still be on strike, significant advances have been made in favor of the authors. The latter guild reached an agreement with the AMPTP and has already agreed to reopen the writers room so that pre-production on a number of massive procedural shows can begin. Chief among them is NCIS.
According to Deadline, the naval procedural joins 9-1-1, Grey’s Anatomy and countless others in terms of getting back on track. The writers room will officially reopen the week of October 6, an unexpectedly quick turnaround given how long the writers strike had gone on prior.
When is NCIS supposed to return in 2024?
According to the publication, shows like NCIS that were initially scheduled for the fall season are around a month behind schedule and will therefore be airing a condensed season. As we previously covered, there was a lot of conjecture about the return dates once the writers’ and actors’ strike was resolved, with the worst-case scenario being as long away as next September.
Thankfully, this appears to be drastically reduced. Now that writers have an opportunity to get back to work, fans could be looking at getting their favorite shows back as early as March 2024. There will still, however, be a reduced episode count. A month is an eternity in the TV world, so shows like NCIS that usually crank out between 20-22 episodes per season will only be able to release about half that number (12-13) for the upcoming season 21.
The same holds true for the remaining just resumed fall programming. Once more, this is a step forward over the season of 6–8 episodes (essentially a miniseries or a third of a regular season) that fans could have had to endure. Things in Hollywood are currently looking the most positive that they have in months, but there are still some significant measures that need to be taken to end the actors strike.
