Simple reason why some royals thought Prince Harry and Meghan Markle’s romance would end

There was one key detail about Meghan that led the Firm to doubt their chances, Prince Harry claimed.

Prince Harry and Meghan’s journey as a couple has been far from easy – and the Duke reckons some members of his family thought they’d never make it.

While they’ve now been married for five years and are parents to two children, the prince claims some members of his family had their doubts, and for one very simple reason.

The claims came in their controversial Netflix series. The Sussexes made various allegations about the actions of King Charles, as well as Harry’s brother Prince William and his wife Kate, Princess of Wales, which were further added to in Harry’s book, Spare.

But in the second episode of the documentary, they described the moment Meghan first met the family – and their immediate impressions.

He added they were likely surprised “a ginger could land such a beautiful woman”. The Duke said however that her being an American actress could have clouded their judgement.

Meghan agreed that her profession was the “biggest problem”. He explained: “I remember my family first meeting her being incredibly impressed.

“Some of them didn’t quite know what to do with themselves (laughs). So I think they were. They were surprised. They were surprised that such a ginger could land such a beautiful woman. And such an intelligent woman.

“But the fact that I was dating an American actress, was probably what clouded their judgement more than anything else.

Meghan's status as an actor was viewed as a detriment, the Prince claimed

Oh, she’s an American actress, this won’t last long.”

Meghan added: “The actress thing was the biggest problem, funnily enough. There is a big idea of what that looks like from the UK standpoint – Hollywood – and it’s just very easy for them to typecast that.”

The Duke and Duchess of Sussex will tomorrow make a rare joint appearance for an in-person Archewell Foundation event – which will clash directly with the Prince and Princess of Wales’ own outings for World Mental Health Day.

The clash comes after an expert claimed Kate quietly “resents” Meghan – although maintains a “composed public image”.

Relationship expert Louella Alderson said the Princess of Wales could feel “competitive” with the Duchess of Sussex as she continues to grab headlines despite leaving the Royal Family in 2020.

“Constant comparisons” between the two could have likely worsened the tension, she said.

Ms Alderson told the Mirror: “It’s certainly possible that Kate may have been feeling uncomfortable or unhappy about the positive attention that Harry and Meghan were receiving during the Invictus Games.

“This could indicate underlying feelings of competition or resentment on Kate’s part towards Meghan.”
