Prince William, who is known for his love of football, has taken to the official Prince and Princess of Wales’s Twitter account to send a congratulatory message to the Lionesses after their amazing win on Wednesday.

The enormous win means that the female football champions are in the final of the Women’s World Cup.

The tweet, signed with a W for William, read: “What a phenomenal performance from the Lionesses – on to the final!

“Commiserations to CommBank Matilda, you’ve played brilliantly and been fantastic co-hosts of this World Cup. W.”

The Lionesses’ triumph also marks the first time that England is in the Women’s World Cup final.

The Prince and Princess of Wales have been known to have supported the Lionesses on their entire sporting journey.

Just moments after their last match ended on Saturday, a tweet posted from William and Kate’s Twitter account read: “Bring on the semi-finals! A hard-fought win, well done Lionesses.”

Earlier this year, William surprised England’s manager Sarina Wiegman with an honorary CBE when he met the team to wish them good luck for the World Cup.

Upon meeting the team, William told them, “Huge respect, and go get ’em!”.

Since 2006, Prince William has been President of the Football Association, which is the governing body for England’s football.

Ms Wiegman previously stated her pride in the team, which likely elevated even further after Wednesday’s win.

The royal had not travelled to Australia to watch the game, instead, William and the Princess of Wales were gearing up to join the King at Balmoral for their annual summer break.

The King and Queen Camilla are already in Scotland, ahead of the family’s arrival, and were spotted at a church there last weekend.

Prince George, 10, Princess Charlotte, eight, and five-year-old Prince Louis are also set to join their grandfather’s first summer break as monarch.

Princess Anne and the Duke and Duchess of Edinburgh are also expected to be in Balmoral for the summer break.

The trip is likely to be bittersweet due to it being the family’s first visit for the summer since the late Queen’s death last September.
