Grey’s Anatomy Season 20 Has Many Longtime Cast Members Returning

Grey's Anatomy season 20 will see many familiar, longtime cast members return, including two original members who've been on since season 1.

Grey’s Anatomy season 20 will see the return of many longtime cast members, including two who have been on the show since season 1. The long-running medical drama is best known for having an ensemble cast of characters, some of whom leave over time and others who are killed off in different ways. However, there are still many characters from early seasons of Grey’s Anatomy that still appeared throughout season 19.

Now, Deadline reports at least six actors who have been on Grey’s Anatomy since at least season 9 will return in season 20. This includes Kevin McKidd as Owen (season 5), Kim Raver as Teddy (season 6), Camilla Luddington as Jo (season 9), and Caterina Scorsone as Amelia (season 9). Grey’s Anatomy season 20 will also see James Pickens Jr. as Richard and Chandra Wilson as Bailey, both of whom first appeared in Grey’s Anatomy season 1.

What To Expect From Grey’s Anatomy Season 20

Ellen Pompeo as Meredith Grey in Grey's Anatomy season 2 episode 5 and Niko Terho as Lucas Adams in Grey's Anatomy season 19 episode 18

Grey’s Anatomy season 19, episode 20, “Happily Ever After?,” saw shocking developments, including Jo’s love interest Sam dying after a horrifying event while he was undergoing emergency surgery. Throughout the Grey’s Anatomy season 19 finale, Teddy had been complaining of a toothache. When it was time for her to do surgery on Sam, Teddy collapsed, getting shocked with a defibrillator in vain attempts to bring her back.

While it seems Teddy will return for Grey’s Anatomy season 20, the surgery room accident will no doubt have major implications for her and Jo’s relationship moving forward. As the pair’s storylines are likely to intertwine in season 20, other long-term characters like Richard, Bailey, and Owen are bound to have their own struggles. This includes Richard still helping Catherine through cancer treatment and Owen rushing to Teddy’s side following her collapse.

Recently, creator Shonda Rhimes said Grey’s Anatomy has a bright future, which means the series could continue for an indefinite period of time. With many actors who have been on the show for so long returning, it seems Grey’s Anatomy season 20 will be a dramatic and enticing next chapter of the series.
