Gerald McRaney Turns 76 Thanks to Wife Who Cared for Him During Cancer — Now He Gives Her Insulin Shots to Save Her Life

  • Gerald McRaney celebrated his 76th birthday on August 19.
  • The “NCIS: Los Angeles” star has been married to his “Designing Women” co-star Delta Burke since 1989.
  • Instead of focusing on his wife’s weight, McRaney gives her insulin shots to save her life, much like the support she gave him while he fought his cancer.

Gerald McRaney, who turned 76 on August 19, has solidified his presence in the entertainment industry over the decades. Best known for his portrayal of retired Admiral Hollace Kilbride on the popular series “NCIS: Los Angeles,” his career has been marked by a consistent commitment to his craft. Despite his age, retirement is not on his horizon, as he continues to find joy and fulfillment in his work.

In an exclusive interview, McRaney expressed his enthusiasm for his role as Admiral Kilbride, comparing it to the enjoyment he experienced during his days on “Simon & Simon.” He initially appeared as the admiral in season six, but his character’s prominence grew as he became the head of the Office of Special Projects in later seasons.

McRaney’s admiration for the show seemed evident as he commended the exceptional crew, talented cast, and strong work ethic that defined the production. He valued the professionalism and camaraderie shared among the team, emphasizing the importance of taking the work seriously while not taking oneself too seriously–a principle he learned early in his acting career.

Despite Burke’s struggles, including weight and health issues, McRaney’s love remains unconditional.

When questioned about his retirement plans, the “Major Dad” alum was unequivocal: retirement is not in his immediate future. He dismissed the notion of being completely retired and humorously suggested he might consider being “semi-retired.” As long as he could memorize his lines and show up for work, he envisioned himself continuing in the industry.

An Enduring Commitment

McRaney’s deep love and devotion to his wife, Delta Burke, is a heartwarming testament to their enduring bond. Their love story began in 1987 when Burke was starring in “Designing Women,” and McRaney was gaining fame through “Simon & Simon.”

Proposing marriage on their second date, his determination to keep Burke by his side was evident from the start. They solidified their commitment in 1989, entering a partnership that has proved enduring and long-lasting.

The Emmy-winning actor’s admiration for his wife extends beyond their shared career worlds. In a 2017 interview, McRaney expressed how Burke’s opinion as an actress held special weight for him, serving as a barometer of his performance. He added, “As a man, I’ve had the love of the finest woman I can possibly imagine.”

Their relationship is characterized by unwavering care and support for one another. Despite Burke’s struggles, including weight and health issues, McRaney’s love remains unconditional.

In an interview from the mid-2000s, Burke admitted how her husband was unbothered by her weight and encouraged her to eat healthy. She explained how McRaney took an active role in her well-being, even administering insulin shots to save her life.

McRaney stood by his wife, offering assistance in managing her health and providing a steady anchor. Similarly, during his own battle with lung cancer in 2004, Burke proved herself a constant source of strength and support.

The “Promised Land” alum’s journey to love was marked by two previous marriages to Pat Moran and Beverly Root, but his partnership with Burke has captured his heart and endured the tests of time.

Currently, McRaney finds himself in the joyous role of a grandfather, with six grandchildren adding warmth and happiness to his life. Contentedly residing with his wife, his home is a place of comfort and togetherness.

Nestled in Central Florida, the couple plans to fully embrace the pleasures of life as they enjoy fishing, shelling, and leisurely beach outings, taking in the serene beauty of the surroundings.
