The Prince and Princess of Wales are hiring a Chief Executive Officer (CEO) to support the pair’s long-term strategy and run their household, which is comprised of about 60 members of staff.

The “unique opportunity” will see the successful candidate report directly to William and Kate – as the pair stipulate that the right person for the job must have a “low ego”.

In an apparent hint that Kensington Palace is already home to some head-strong characters, the job advertisement says those applying must be “emotionally intelligent, with ‘low ego’, and strong self-awareness and understanding of their impact on others”.

Anyone wanting the job must be “able to operate as a ‘servant’ leader, empowering the senior team”, it adds.

Other key qualities include being an experienced leader, an appreciation of Kate and William’s duties and responsibilities, and being an “inspiring internal champion”.

Hiring a CEO marks a change in direction for the royal household, as typically a senior royal’s team is headed up by a Private Secretary.

The job has not been advertised in the normal way, under the current vacancies section of the Royal Family’s website, as Kate and William have chosen instead to hire recruitment firm Odgers Berndtson to find the right candidate. They will be responsible for reviewing all applications.

An insider told the Daily Mail’s Richard Eden that it is a “revolutionary move”, adding: “They are overthrowing the traditional, hierarchical structure in which staff answer to private secretaries.

“It has really set the cat among the pigeons. Will the King and Queen have to follow their lead?”

The salary of the CEO has not been stipulated, but they are likely to be paid more than the couple’s private secretaries.

Hours of work are 37.5 hours per week, Monday to Friday, though the application concedes that overtime may be necessary “for the proper fulfilment of duties, or to meet unexpected or urgent demands”.

As well as heading up Kensington Palace, the CEO will deal directly with the King and Queen’s household, “serving as the strategic interface to Buckingham Palace, to align The Royal Highnesses” priorities with those in support of His Majesty The King and Her Majesty The Queen”.

Currently, Jean-Christophe Gray CBE is private secretary to Prince William, while Kate recently hired PR guru Alison Corfield as her private secretary.
